About the Council

The Disability Council of NSW is a key agency in the complex network of government, non-government and commercial organisations whose activities affect the lives of people with disability, their families and close associates. We aim to contribute to that network in ways that add value to our partners so that we can work together to build a better future for all people with disability.

The Disability Council is something of a hybrid organisation. We’re not Government but we advise governments and work alongside Government departments. We’re not a service provider but we contribute to both service reform and new developments. Strictly speaking, we’re not a directly representative organisation of people with disability but we often give voice to their interests as we give advice and promote positive change.

Our role is clearly set out by an Act of Parliament, The Community Welfare Act of 1987. We have three duties as a result of that Act.

They are:

  • To advise Government on disability matters;
  • To raise community awareness about people with disability and their aspirations; and
  • To promote participation by people with disability.

Our Disability Council web site gives you a flavour of who we are, what we do and how we set about achieving our goals. I hope you find it interesting, informative and helpful. Naturally, I would welcome your feedback on its content by writing to me at disabilitycouncil@facs.nsw.gov.au

This web site contains the Council’s Strategic Focus. This, our strategic directions document, sets out the principles that guide our operational practice as we work to fulfil our duties. We are aiming high and we are ambitious to achieve substantial and significant progress for people with disability and their families.

We are committed to building and sustaining partnerships across sectors around a shared purpose. It is our hope that, as you read the documents on our web site, you will feel encouraged by our goals and will want to work with us as we organise to achieve them.

Our Purpose

To provide best quality advice to Government and promote a positive vision of the future for all people with disability.

Our Vision

A socially just community in which Government policy and practice reflect the lives and experiences of people with disability as individuals, family members and participants with many roles in a broad range of diverse settings, remaining always mindful of the rights of people with disability, respecting their choices, celebrating their diversity and valuing their contributions.
