Welcome to the web site of the Disability Council of NSW.
Here you will find information about the Council (including
current Council members), our Purpose, Values,
Principles and the Key
Result Areas that form the basis of our strategic plan,
entitled Strategic
Focus 2008. That document sets out the framework upon
which the Disability Council of NSW will build its
activities over the three years to December 2008. This web site also provides you with information about
the Council’s small staff team (six in number), which I
manage. We have created a group of policy
areas. A different team member has principal
responsibility for each portfolio. These policy portfolios
reflect the current work priorities for staff members. They
don’t represent everything we do but it’s in the
portfolio areas that you’ll find the greatest emphasis
of our working commitments at the moment We hope our goals are clear in this web site. We have
invested a considerable amount of effort in arriving at
them. We started with the duties placed on the Council by the
Community
Welfare Act of 1987. In some senses that meant a return
to first principles for the Council, following a period of
review in 2005. We have a duty to fulfil a set of
obligations legislated by the State Parliament. Our
Strategic Focus 2008 indicates how we will meet those
obligations. Our portfolios tell you what we’ve been
working on recently and where our efforts will lie in the
years ahead. The onus upon the Council’s Secretariat is to
deliver results based on our stated intentions. We will try
our best to ensure that we do. To provide best quality advice to Government and promote
a positive vision of the future for all people with
disability. A socially just community in which Government policy and
practice reflect the lives and experiences of people with
disability as individuals, family members and participants
with many roles in a broad range of diverse settings,
remaining always mindful of the rights of people with
disability, respecting their choices, celebrating their
