The handbook is designed to help these parents to identify and achieve their dreams for their child, especially the dream of including their child in an ordinary school.
Sometimes parents think the local school is only for children whose needs are not significant.They may have been told that their son or daughter has a severe disability or high support needs. This book is about including any child in an ordinary class.
This handbook is for you:
- if you would like to know more about children with disabilities going into an ordinary class at school, no matter what labels have been used to describe your child
- if you havent yet considered your choices about a school for your child and would like some ideas and suggestions for doing so.
When reading the handbook, keep in mind your dream of what will make a happy and valued life for your child.
The handbook contains information on the following:
- your childs rights ;
- what you can ask for and expect from schools;
- enrolment (in government and non-government schools);
- Department of Education Training enrolment policies;
- what is involved in an inclusive education for your child;
- how to work with your childs school and education system;
- how to prepare for meetings with the principal or staff;
- how to continue your efforts throughout your childs schooling;
- how to prepare your child for life after school.
Most sections of the handbook also contain appendices which provide further information or ideas on particular school (agendas, minutes, etc.) or any other school documents you consider worth holding onto.
